Harvesting the MAGIC of ROTARY
APR. 25-26, 2025
A very special “Thank You” to D-5630 Administrative Assistant Cheryl Bryan, daa@5630mail.org for her years of dedication. Cheryl is “retiring” from helping for years with the District Newsletter, PETS registration, and of course this conference (along with others past). Cheryl has provided long-distance support from her home club in Smyrna, TN and was with us in person all weekend. Please drop Cheryl an email of appreciation.
Also any major event, like this conference, doesn’t happen by accident. District Conference Co-Chairs Sarah Havermann and Brooke Robertson assembled an amazing group of talented Rotarians who conducted a masterful weekend of fun. “Thank You” to Sarah and Brooke for an amazing conference.
Friday, April 25
The District Conference was launched at a dedication and blessing for a “Peace Pole” at the Family YMCA in Ogallala. Following the dedication attended by allmost 40 people, guests and Rotarians were invited to participate in a community “Poker Run” collecting playing cards at 5 different locations. The 5 cards would make their poke hand, and prizes were awarded Friday evening.
Special guests from around the globe joined us from India, Mexico, Argentina, Colorado, Montana, Ecuador, and of course Past Rotary International President Mark Maloney and Gay came from Decatur, Alabama.
The annual business meeting was conducted, approving the 25-26 District budget, followed by a short presentation from District Rotary Foundation Chair, PDG Bob Mayber. Following the business meeting a social hours allowed for friends to catch up on past activities in their, families, clubs and professional lives.
The evening session was kicked off by President Jessop Adams (Ogallala), and a welcome from DG Lorena Beckius. The entire evening was a true cultural experience. Dinner was presented by all of our Rotary Youth Exchange students with homemade dishes representing their homes. Foods from Ukraine, Spain, Ecuador, Romania, Bolivia, Mexico and Brazil were delicious! Our RYE students are such an amazing group or Rotary ambassadors. Cookbooks were available as a fundraiser to help support District 5630 RYE. If you would like to help support D-5630 RYE by purchasing a copy, please contact Paula Witt, wittinc@icloud.com.
Friday presentations included “Girls Empowerment in Zimbabwe”, “NERDS: The Dolly Parton Library”, and a special presentation from the keynote speaker, Nebraska Secretary of State, Robert B. Evnen. Sec. Evnen is also a Rotarian in Club 14, Lincoln. During his presentation Sec. Evnen presented honorary Nebraska citizenship certificates to all inbound Rotary Youth Exchange students.
The evening was capped off with entertainment from four talented young ladies all dancers from the Ogallala Dance Academy and talent showcased by our Rotary Youth Exchange students. Performances included Flamenco dance from Spain; Alba (Lincoln) and Alvaro (Gothenburg), a cello performance from Ecuador; Isa (Ogallala), vocals from Ukraine; Sofia (Hastings) and Margo (Lincoln), poetry from Ukraine; Margo (Lincoln), dance from Brazil; Ana (Hastings) and Owen (Hastings), a pair of dance performances from Bolivia; Mateo (Lincoln), and finally a guitar solo from Romania; Andrei (Minden).Â
